Silvered Leaf Monkey

Trachypithecus cristatus

Silvery Lutung

Silvered leaf monkeys are one of the cutest primates you’ll come across, especially when they’re babies—their fur is bright orange! As they grow, their fur changes to the distinctive silvery color that gives them their name. Unlike other monkeys, they love eating leaves more than anything else.

In Kota Belud’s mangrove areas, silvered leaf monkeys can often be seen high in the trees, munching on leaves. They thrive in this environment, benefiting from the abundance of foliage. Their role as herbivores helps keep the growth of plants balanced, and their presence in Sabah’s mangroves is essential for sustaining the natural ecosystem.

The silvered leaf monkey is known for its gentle and social demeanor. Found primarily in Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand, they inhabit coastal mangroves and inland forests. Their diet consists mainly of young leaves, buds, and flowers. Silvered leaf monkeys are unique for their bright orange infants, which gradually turn silvery-gray as they mature. Conservation efforts are critical for their survival, focusing on protecting their forest habitats.
